Eduardo and Cristina is a two-act opera by Gioachino Rossini (with a libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola and Gherardo Bevilacqua Aldobrandini, adapted from a text by Giovanni Schmidt), first performed in Venice in 1819. Set at the Swedish court, it tells the story of Cristina, daughter of King Carlo, who is secretly married to the valiant general Eduardo, with whom she has had a son, Gustavo. Upon Eduardo’s victorious return from a war against the Russians, the king announces Cristina’s marriage to the Scottish prince Giacomo to seal an alliance. The young woman refuses, but during the wedding preparations, little Gustavo is discovered; Cristina confesses to being his mother without revealing his father, unleashing Charles’s wrath, who has the two lovers arrested.
In the second act, whilst Cristina continues to resist pressure to marry James, a new Russian offensive breaks out. Eduardo, freed by his faithful servant Atlei, takes command of the troops and defeats the enemy. On his return to court, he offers himself as a sacrifice to save Cristina and her son. The king, moved by his courage and the loyalty of the couple, finally grants his pardon and blesses their union. The opera concludes with universal joy and the family’s reunion.
