Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was the most celebrated Italian composer of his age, a master of both opera buffa and opera seria. Born in Pesaro, he penned nearly forty operas before the age of thirty-seven, including immortal works such as “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” “La Cenerentola,” and “Guillaume Tell.” “Adina, ovvero Il Califfo di Bagdad” (1818), though lesser-known, showcases all the melodic wit, rhythmic verve, and vocal brilliance that made Rossini the darling of Europe.

Rossini’s distinctive style, characterized by elegant melodies, rapid vocal passages, lively rhythms, and inventive orchestration, had a profound influence on nineteenth-century opera. His music combines theatrical energy with remarkable technical precision, allowing singers to display both virtuosity and expressive range. Even today, his operas remain staples of the international repertoire, admired for their wit, brilliance, and enduring freshness.

After retiring from the operatic stage at the height of his fame, he spent his later years in Paris as a revered cultural figure and gourmet.

L’occasione fa il ladro, ossia Il cambio della valigia is a one-act farce by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Luigi Prividali, first performed in Venice in 1812. The plot revolves around the reckless Don Parmenione and Count Alberto, both of whom are caught in a storm at an inn whilst Alberto is travelling to meet his betrothed, Berenice, of whom he possesses only a portrait. A chance mix-up involving identical suitcases allows Parmenione to come into possession of the girl’s documents and portrait; struck by her beauty, he decides to seize the opportunity and pretend to be the Count in order to win her over. Meanwhile, the faithful Ernestina – a young noblewoman who loves Parmenione and has followed him disguised as a maid – tries to unmask him, aided by the valet Martino.

In the single act, the misunderstanding comes to a head: having presented himself at Berenice’s house as Alberto, Parmenione clumsily courts the girl, who is unsettled by the strange behaviour of her self-styled fiancé. The arrival of the real Count Alberto throws everyone into utter confusion, until Ernestina, revealing her true identity, exposes the deception and publicly declares her love. Moved by the girl’s loyalty, Parmenione comes to his senses; Alberto and Berenice recognise one another, whilst Parmenione marries his beloved Ernestina. To everyone’s amazement, the ‘opportunity’ that the thief had seized turns into an unexpected source of happiness, and everyone celebrates the conclusion of their adventures with a lively choral finale.
