Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was the most celebrated Italian composer of his age, a master of both opera buffa and opera seria. Born in Pesaro, he penned nearly forty operas before the age of thirty-seven, including immortal works such as “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” “La Cenerentola,” and “Guillaume Tell.” “Adina, ovvero Il Califfo di Bagdad” (1818), though lesser-known, showcases all the melodic wit, rhythmic verve, and vocal brilliance that made Rossini the darling of Europe.

Rossini’s distinctive style, characterized by elegant melodies, rapid vocal passages, lively rhythms, and inventive orchestration, had a profound influence on nineteenth-century opera. His music combines theatrical energy with remarkable technical precision, allowing singers to display both virtuosity and expressive range. Even today, his operas remain staples of the international repertoire, admired for their wit, brilliance, and enduring freshness.

After retiring from the operatic stage at the height of his fame, he spent his later years in Paris as a revered cultural figure and gourmet.

Tancredi is a heroic opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Gaetano Rossi, which was first performed in Venice in 1813. The story centres on Tancredi, an exiled knight from Syracuse, who returns to his homeland in disguise whilst Syracuse is under threat from the Saracens. Amenaide, daughter of the nobleman Argirio, is secretly in love with him but has been betrothed against her will to the ambitious Orbazzano. A letter the young woman wrote to Tancredi falls into the wrong hands and is interpreted as a message intended for the enemy, Solamir. Accused of treason, Amenaide is sentenced to death, whilst Tancredi, unaware that the message was addressed to him, becomes convinced that he has been betrayed and is overcome by despair.

In the second act, the hero, torn between jealousy and love, challenges Orbazzano to a duel and defeats him, but Amenaide remains a prisoner of the furious crowd. Tancredi then launches himself against the Saracens, leads Syracuse to a crushing victory and vanishes into the maelstrom of battle; his death is announced, and Amenaide, on the verge of being executed, already mourns him as lost. But Tancredi reappears alive, wounded but safe, and the truth about the letter is finally revealed, dispelling every shadow of suspicion. Argirio forgives the lovers, Orbazzano is condemned, and the two young people are united in marriage to the jubilation of all, whilst the chorus celebrates the triumph of love and the return of peace to Sicily.
