Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was the most celebrated Italian composer of his age, a master of both opera buffa and opera seria. Born in Pesaro, he penned nearly forty operas before the age of thirty-seven, including immortal works such as “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” “La Cenerentola,” and “Guillaume Tell.” “Adina, ovvero Il Califfo di Bagdad” (1818), though lesser-known, showcases all the melodic wit, rhythmic verve, and vocal brilliance that made Rossini the darling of Europe.

Rossini’s distinctive style, characterized by elegant melodies, rapid vocal passages, lively rhythms, and inventive orchestration, had a profound influence on nineteenth-century opera. His music combines theatrical energy with remarkable technical precision, allowing singers to display both virtuosity and expressive range. Even today, his operas remain staples of the international repertoire, admired for their wit, brilliance, and enduring freshness.

After retiring from the operatic stage at the height of his fame, he spent his later years in Paris as a revered cultural figure and gourmet.

Torvaldo and Dorliska is a semi-serious opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Cesare Sterbini, first performed in Rome in 1815. The story centres on Dorliska, the sweet and faithful wife of the knight Torvaldo, who is threatened by the wicked Duke of Ordow, who has her abducted and imprisoned in his castle in order to force her to submit to his desires. Torvaldo, determined to free her, sneaks into the fortress disguised as a shepherd, aided by his loyal and comical servant Giorgio and the gardener Ormondo, who endures the tyrant’s abuse. Whilst Dorliska steadfastly resists the Duke’s threats, Torvaldo plots in the shadows; but the treacherous Ordow, suspicious of the stranger’s presence and incited by the maid Carlotta, uncovers the deception and has the two men imprisoned, sentencing the husband to death and plunging the young bride into despair.

In the second act, hope is rekindled thanks to the cunning of Giorgio and Ormondo, who manage to get a key to the prison to Dorliska. She frees Torvaldo and together they plan their escape, but are caught once more. Just as all seems lost and the Duke is about to unleash his cruelty, news suddenly arrives that the castle is surrounded by the soldiers of the rightful sovereign, who have come to arrest Ordow and put an end to his tyranny. The villain is captured and punished; Dorliska and Torvaldo are finally reunited, free at last; and the faithful Giorgio, with his comical wisdom, leads the final chorus celebrating the triumph of love, courage and justice.
