Il signor Bruschino is a light-hearted one-act farce by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa, first performed in Venice in 1813. The plot revolves around Gaudenzio, Sofia’s guardian, who has promised his ward in marriage to the son of an old friend, Mr Bruschino, without the two young people ever having met. Florville, who is in love with Sofia and is the son of one of Gaudenzio’s enemies, discovers that the real Mr Bruschino’s son is being held in an inn for debt. With the help of the innkeeper Filiberto and the maid Marianna, he pays off part of the debt, forges a letter of introduction and impersonates the unknown fiancé in order to marry Sofia.
When Bruschino senior arrives, he fails to recognise his ‘son’ and denounces him as an impostor, sparking a series of misunderstandings and arguments. The police commissioner and Filiberto confirm the false identity, whilst Gaudenzio reproaches his father for his harshness. Bruschino senior, sensing an opportunity to take revenge on his enemy, pretends to recognise Florville as his son and consents to the marriage. Finally, the real Bruschino the younger arrives, the truth is revealed and Gaudenzio, though furious, forgives the couple: the opera ends in a joyful general reconciliation.
