Ivanhoé is an opera in three acts by Gioachino Rossini (a pastiche featuring music taken from his earlier operas) with a libretto by Émile Deschamps and Gabriel-Gustave de Wailly, first performed in Paris in 1826. The story, loosely based on Walter Scott’s novel, is set in medieval England, torn apart by the conflict between the Saxons and the Normans. The Saxon knight Ivanhoé, wounded and recently returned from the Crusades, is in love with Léila, the daughter of the Muslim Ismaël, but must contend with his Norman rival, Brian de Boisguilbert. Ivanhoé’s father, Cédric, and the Norman Grand Master Beaumanoir represent the two warring factions, whilst Léila is unjustly accused and put on trial.
In the second and third acts, tensions culminate in a tournament, a siege and a trial in which Léila faces the death penalty. Ivanhoé, despite his wounds, intervenes to defend her; Boisguilbert is defeated and the truth comes to light. In the happy ending, Ivanhoe and Léila are united, whilst Saxons and Normans are reconciled into a single English people ready to defend the kingdom. The opera concludes with a hymn to harmony and justice, celebrating the union of rival lineages under the banner of love and courage.
