Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was the most celebrated Italian composer of his age, a master of both opera buffa and opera seria. Born in Pesaro, he penned nearly forty operas before the age of thirty-seven, including immortal works such as “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” “La Cenerentola,” and “Guillaume Tell.” “Adina, ovvero Il Califfo di Bagdad” (1818), though lesser-known, showcases all the melodic wit, rhythmic verve, and vocal brilliance that made Rossini the darling of Europe.

Rossini’s distinctive style, characterized by elegant melodies, rapid vocal passages, lively rhythms, and inventive orchestration, had a profound influence on nineteenth-century opera. His music combines theatrical energy with remarkable technical precision, allowing singers to display both virtuosity and expressive range. Even today, his operas remain staples of the international repertoire, admired for their wit, brilliance, and enduring freshness.

After retiring from the operatic stage at the height of his fame, he spent his later years in Paris as a revered cultural figure and gourmet.

L’inganno felice is a one-act farce by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa, first performed in Venice in 1812. The plot centres on Isabella, wife of Duke Bertrando, who is unjustly repudiated due to the slander of the wicked counsellor Ormondo; having been rejected by her, he leads her to believe she has been unfaithful. Thrown into the sea on the Duke’s orders, Isabella survives the shipwreck and is rescued by the miner Tarabotto, who, to protect her, hides her in the guise of his niece Nisa. Ten years later, the Duke – still in love and consumed by remorse – arrives in that very village accompanied by Ormondo; Tarabotto, having recognised the Duke, then devises a clever ruse to unmask the culprit: he exploits Nisa’s resemblance to his lost wife to prompt the Duke to investigate, finally producing a portrait of the real Isabella.

In the single act, the deception is carried out: cornered by the evidence, Ormondo breaks down and publicly confesses his crime, being immediately arrested. Isabella and Bertrando embrace once more amidst the general joy, mending their broken love. The counsellor’s treachery thus becomes the very means of reconciliation, and everyone celebrates the defeat of falsehood and the triumph of fidelity, hailing the ‘happy deception’ that has restored happiness to the couple.
