La donna del lago is a two-act melodrama by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Andrea Leone Tottola, first performed in Naples in 1819. The story, loosely based on Walter Scott’s poem, is set in 16th-century Scotland on the shores of Loch Katrine. Elena, daughter of the rebel Douglas, is betrothed against her will to the chieftain of the Highlanders, Rodrigo di Dhu, but secretly loves the young Malcolm Groeme. King James V, disguised as a simple hunter named Uberto, loses his way during a hunting party and is taken in by Elena on her boat; the two take an immediate liking to one another. When the king realises he is in his enemy’s home and understands that Elena is betrothed to a rebel, he takes his leave, but leaves her a royal ring that will enable her to seek mercy should she be in danger. Malcolm and Rodrigo clash out of jealousy, whilst the clans prepare for revolt.
In the second act, the battle results in the defeat of the rebels and the death of Rodrigo. Douglas surrenders to the king to save his daughter, whilst Elena, using the ring, travels to Stirling to beg for clemency. James V reveals his true identity, pardons Douglas and the rebels, and, recognising the true love between Elena and Malcolm, blesses their marriage. The opera concludes with a grand hymn to the king’s magnanimity and to peace between the factions, celebrating the goodness and reconciliation that triumph over divisions.
