La scala di seta is a one-act comic farce by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa, first performed in Venice in 1812. The story is set in the apartment of Giulia, the ward of her guardian Dormont, who has promised his niece in marriage to the wealthy Blansac. Giulia is secretly married to Dorvil, who climbs up to her room every night by lowering a silk ladder from the balcony. The servant Germano, a meddlesome fellow who is infatuated with Giulia, and her cousin Lucilla complicate matters with misunderstandings and jealousy. Giulia tries to make Blansac fall in love with Lucilla in order to free herself from the imposed engagement.
Over the course of the night, amidst chases, hide-and-seek and revelations, the truth comes to light: Germano discovers the secret of the ladder and reveals it; Blansac and Lucilla fall in love with one another; in the end, Dormont surprises everyone and, following the confessions, forgives Giulia and Dorvil’s secret marriage. Blansac marries Lucilla and everyone is reconciled in a joyful finale that celebrates the love and cunning of the young couple in the face of their guardians’ impositions.
