Gioachino Rossini

Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was the most celebrated Italian composer of his age, a master of both opera buffa and opera seria. Born in Pesaro, he penned nearly forty operas before the age of thirty-seven, including immortal works such as “Il barbiere di Siviglia,” “La Cenerentola,” and “Guillaume Tell.” “Adina, ovvero Il Califfo di Bagdad” (1818), though lesser-known, showcases all the melodic wit, rhythmic verve, and vocal brilliance that made Rossini the darling of Europe.

Rossini’s distinctive style, characterized by elegant melodies, rapid vocal passages, lively rhythms, and inventive orchestration, had a profound influence on nineteenth-century opera. His music combines theatrical energy with remarkable technical precision, allowing singers to display both virtuosity and expressive range. Even today, his operas remain staples of the international repertoire, admired for their wit, brilliance, and enduring freshness.

After retiring from the operatic stage at the height of his fame, he spent his later years in Paris as a revered cultural figure and gourmet.

Sigismondo is a two-act opera by Gioachino Rossini, with a libretto by Giuseppe Maria Foppa, which was first performed in Venice in 1814. The plot centres on Sigismondo, King of Poland, who has been driven to a dark madness by his treacherous minister Ladislao, who has led him to believe that his wife, Aldimira, is unfaithful. The queen, imprisoned and sentenced to death, awaits her fate whilst her father Ulderico, King of Bohemia, arrives in disguise as the doctor Eginardo to save her. Complicating the plot is Anagilda, Ladislao’s sister, who is secretly in love with the king and willing to do anything to take Aldimira’s place on the throne. Whilst Sigismondo is torn between hallucinations and fits of rage, Ulderico hatches a plan to unmask the true traitor.

In the second act, the deception unravels: the fake doctor Eginardo, with the help of a loyal courtier, brings to light the evidence of the conspiracy hatched by Ladislao and proves Aldimira’s innocence. Sigismondo, having emerged from his delirium, recognises his beloved wife and repents of his unjust condemnation. Ladislao is arrested and sentenced to death, whilst Anagilda, though unmasked and repentant, is granted forgiveness. The king regains his sanity and peace of mind, embracing his wife once more amidst the jubilation of the people. The opera concludes with a solemn chorus celebrating the triumph of marital fidelity and the return of serenity to the Polish throne.
